So it has been a long and painful wait for those of you toting around a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 for the past few months, but Samsung has announced that their popular Galaxy S phone will begin receiving the Android 2.2 update. The Froyo roll out will begin in European Markets then make its way around the globe, hopefully touching down here in the States sooner rather than later with the I9000's siblings (Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant, and Epic 4G). Some have confirmed that update process is underway in various countries, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to be exact, while others have yet to be graced by the presence of the rumored update.
When the update becomes available for your market, you will need to update using Samsung's Kies software update program. Unfortunately, if you are a Mac user, you will run into some problems as Kies only has support for Windows at this time. Hopefully, by the time that the update reaches us here in the US, there will be some support for Mac OSX. The jump from version 2.1 to 2.2 isn't a huge leap, but the differences you will see in the Froyo update are as follows:
- Android 2.2 JIT compiler
- Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility
- New Android Market with auto-updating
- Speed improvements
- Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover
- Improved default keyboard
- Quick links to “GPS” and “Auto rotation” toggles on notification bar added
- Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock
- Colored icons in settings
- GPS Fix
- Colored settings icons
- Media Hub
- Darker menu theme, navy blue color
- Better Exchange support
- Video records in MP4 format
- New Search widget
- New Gmail application?
