I’m in awe over something really simple, and I’m not 100 percent sure why. This cellie, called John’s Phone, holds no fuss, no muss and, well, not really much of anything outside calls. No LCD. No apps! Not a keyboard of any kind outside the dialpad. No accelerometer, GPS or any number of other things that could bring joy — or bugs. The fact that a cell phone has become newsworthy for the fact that it’s solely for phone calls, well that’s got to be a sign of the times.
John’s Phone is an unlocked quadband GSM cell phone that even comes with a pen — not a stylus, mind you, but a real pen for, like, jotting down paper notes. The keys are large, and so is the standby time; it can go three weeks without charging.
In all honesty, I can’t stop staring at it. It’s like my mind keeps going, “It’s just a phone? It’s only a phone? I don’t get it.” But after my mind wraps around this thing, I actually find it really charming. Sure, it’s the bleeding edge of technology, circa 1990, but I love the simple lines and adorable aesthetic. (The fact that a notepad and pen are built-in is beyond quaint.) This would make a great back-up phone. And for $89, why not?
