Google: Android 2.1 now used on 55 percent of devices

Right on schedule, Google has updated its Android platform distribution numbers.  Android 2.1 is still slowly gaining ground, now sitting pretty at 55.5 percent.  That means its gained nearly two percent from the last report two weeks ago.  Version 2.2, aka Froyo, is now at 3.3 percent, up from 1.8 percent two weeks ago.  Unsurprisingly, distribution of Android 1.5 and 1.6 has continued to go down, with 18.9 percent and 22.1 percent, respectively.  Finally, Google reports that 0.3 percent of devices are running obsolete versions of the Android OS.

With the recent releases of the devices like the EVO, as well as the fact that more devices are getting the update to 2.1, it's no surprise that Eclair is the dominant Android dessert on the market.  Now that we're seeing hot phones like the DROID X, Vibrant, and Captivate launch, too, 2.1's share should go up even more in the next report.  However, the fact that we're still seeing some devices released with outdated versions of Android, like the Dell Streak, as well as the fact that some phones are still waiting for their update to 2.1, is a little disappointing.  Hopefully we'll start seeing more updates roll out to help eradicate the fragmentation issues that Android has been experiencing.
