About a month ago, there were rumors that AT&T would be launching its 3G MicroCell nationwide in May. Those rumors turned out to be false, but now the device is finally available to everyone. Speaking at the Femtocells World Summit recently, AT&T director Gordon Mansfield stated that the 3G MicroCell is now available in all markets. Mansfield went on to defend the recent news that data used on a MicroCell connection would count against a user's data plan, saying that all traffic sent through a MicroCell still goes through AT&T's core infrastructure. Besides, if you're using a MicroCell, there's a good chance you're near a Wi-Fi connection that can be used instead.
It certainly took AT&T a while, but it's great to see them finally rolling out the 3G MicroCell to all markets. Some users really need a device like this to take care of their poor coverage, which may not necessarily be AT&T's fault. I recently moved into a new place, but my previous home had poor coverage with every carrier because I was living in a valley surrounded by trees that no cell signal could penetrate. $150 may seem steep, but it's not a terrible price considering the MicroCell will pump out cell service where there previously was none.
