Google Voice not yet open to the public

Ever have those situations in life where you look back and wish that you had done something differently, or perhaps taken advantage of something?  Many feel that way about Google Voice.  Since its purchase of GrandCentral, people have wanted to sign up with the VoIP provider.  Unfortunately, Google killed the invitation method post-buyout, so the only users able to use the service are those that signed up during the GrandCentral days.

Needless to say, it's something that's in high demand, and a rumor circulated yesterday about the service becoming available to the public on June 18th (today).  Unfortunately, GrandCentral founder Greg Walker killed the speculation when he tweeted that the service was not going to be available today (though he went on to say that they're "cranking 24/7 to get there").

So, bad news for those who wanted to sign up for the service today.  Should Walker's comment be true, however, we'll see it launch sooner rather than later.
