Confirmed: T-Mobile to offer broadband wireless card, but to existing customers only?

We reported on it late last month, and it appears that the rumors are finally coming to fruition - T-Mobile is slated to launch its wireless broadband card as early as March 25th.  The catch?  It appears that it will be available to existing customers only, meaning you won't be able to walk into the store and walk out with a standalone data card account.  Granted, you could sign up for a voice line and a data line at the same time, but the 'existing customers only' clause certainly marks a departure from the other large carriers.

From a pricing perspective, the service is expected to fall in line with the others at $59.99 per month, and will offer 5GB of data transfer monthly.  Domestic roaming and voice calling will be completely blocked, however international roaming will be billed at typical rates.  Our friends over at TmoNews have documented what exactly 5GB translates into in real-life terms:

  • Sending 1,700,000 emails at 1 page with no attachments
  • Looking at close to 35,000 webpages
  • Sending or receiving 1700 20 page PowerPoint presentations
  • Downloading close to 1300 3 minute songs
