Wal-Phone: $99 4GB iPhone Rumored for Wal-Mart

This isn't so outlandish of an idea, but I'll believe it when I see it.

The hot Rumor du Jour has a 4GB Apple iPhone headed to uber-discount store Wal-Mart at the low, low cost of $99 with a two-year contract.  99 bones is less than you'll wind up forking over to AT&T for that first month's bill once you figure in the iPhone data plan and activation fee, never mind all of those mysterious taxes that show up cell phone bills.

Boy Genius Report ran the story earlier today, and they also reported a few months back that iPhones of some sort would start showing up in Wal-Marts at some point or another.  The latest "intel" has December 28th as iPhoneMart day.

I'll say this about the whole story:  Apple would sell A TON of $99 iPhones.  Cell phone geeks are shaking their heads saying that 16GB isn't enough storage on an iPhone, let alone a mere four gigs.  But most people don't really care - they want an iPhone because it's cool, it's sexy, and you can "do that pinchy thing with your fingers on the screen" on it.  

A sub-$100 price tag would also make loads of us short-sighted ADHD types forget all about the $70+ monthly that it costs to keep a smartphone alive and chirping these days, as well.  The insane lines outside of Apple stores during this Summer's iPhone 3G launch were proof enough of that, no?
