Skyfire ups the ante for "mobile" browsing

Immobilized by your mobile? Tired of being redirected to a crippled shadow of the site for which you've diligently searched? Well, there's a new beta browser on the block, turning desktop tricks that I'm sure you'd like to witness. It's called Skyfire, and currently runs on Symbian and Windows Mobile smartphones.

The idea is a free program that brings the real Internet to your hand-held; not a "mobilized" version. Skyfire Labs has a video available that demonstrates their browser's ability to run circles around the competition - at least under certain circumstances. After dropping that ambiguous statement, I feel it is my responsibility to give the software a rigorous testing.

Unfortunately, only U.S. devices are supported by this beta. The only Symbian or Windows Mobile phone I have on hand is European, which could be why launching skyfire.exe gives me errors, I suppose. I tried disabling Microsoft error reporting, which has caused me problems in the past, but I still can't get beyond the Skyfire splash screen on Samsung's i900-Omnia.

The app is in the beta stage, and the developers would likely be thankful for your feedback, if you're the kind that likes to ride the bleeding edge. The Skyfire site is full of cool information, and you can get a feel for the software yourself by watching the vid, or grabbing the beta.

PhoneDog will be following up  on this one, for sure. Keep your eyes on the blog, and your ears on the Bark; Skyfire warrants future coverage.
