iPhone Watch: Free, free, free to unlock

Mere days after the first pay-per-use iPhone unlock solutions hit the net, a band of hackers known as iPhoneDevTeam have released the first free software unlock for iPhone.  In a nutshell this means that you can use your iPhone on any GSM network across the globe with any SIM card.  U.S. users get the convenience of not having to sign an AT&T contract (or any contract at all) in order to use an iPhone; our friends across the globe can actually now use the thing, as no non-US versions of the handset have yet been released by Apple.

The trick is that the free unlock process is pretty complicated and looks like it'll require 30-60 minutes of your time, minimum.  Folks are at work on a simplified, GUI-based app and there's one in beta over at freeiphoneunlock.com.  Myself, I picked up a 4gb iPhone and also got a paid unlock code thanks to the folks over at freeit4less.com (a reseller of iPhoneSIMFree's solution).  I'm working on a video of the unlock process - succeed or fail, look for it on PhoneDog.com later today.

In any case, hats off to all of the folks who worked so hard and so fast to free iPhone from its software shackles.  Whether or not you care about all of this stuff, it is pretty amazing to see such talent and hard work come together so quickly for a worthy (?) cause.
