Apple Heated Up over iPhone.

Love the look of the iPhone but don't want to wait until June, switch to Cingular, or give up your PocketPC or Treo's functionality?  Well, up until hours ago you could get iPhony - a a skin (PocketPC) or launcher app (Treo) replicating the look of iPhone's now famous icons-on-black home screen.

However, Apple legal has already been on the move, sending cease-and-desist letters to bloggers and journalists alike demanding the immediate removal of the freeware as well as iPhone screenshots.  Apple claims its protecting its own intellectual property, while supporters of the freeware apps claim Apple released the iPhone screenshot into the public and so has no right to stop individuals from copying the look on their own non-Apple devices.

Apple's got a history of sending the lawyers out to deal with bloggers they feel are encroaching on their turf.  Check out the letter from Apple legal on the MoDaCo website (link below) and tell us what you think: Should iPhony be available to the public, or does it impinge on Apple's copyrights?
